The tradition of ngelawar is closely related to various Balinese celebrations which involve gathering with friends and family, including the Galungan celebration. Lawar is a typical Balinese food which is usually a mixture of various types of chopped vegetables and meat which is boiled and then mixed with big spices or complete spices.

Ngelwar conveys the meaning of closeness and togetherness in a family, not just eating, because the process of making lawar requires the involvement of many people and each person gets a part in doing the work in preparing it.

Lawar in Balinese tradition is usually done during the Panca Yadnya ceremony as an offering and also for eating. For offerings, the laying of lawar cannot be arbitrary. Lawar must be placed in the direction of the wind. The white lawar is placed in the east for Dewa Iswara. The red lawar is to the south for Lord Brahma. While the yellow lawar is placed on the center of gravity for the God Mahadeva. The white color represents purity, red represents courage, yellow represents wisdom, black represents compassion, and mixed colors represent unity or concentration.

Ngelwar is a meaningful tradition not only as offerings and food but also as a symbol of Balinese Hindu family harmony.
